On April 30, Southeast University and Newcastle University in the United Kingdom officially signed a cooperation agreement on China-UK Excellent Engineer talent training. This cooperation marks the first pioneering exploration between Chinese and British universities in the field of international joint training of excellent engineers. The two sides will focus on cultivating top innovative talents in engineering, jointly build an international industry-education integrated collaborative training system, and inject new momentum into the international development of engineering education.
Sun Litao, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Southeast University Committee and Vice President of Southeast University, and Vice-Chancellor Lili of Newcastle University signed the agreement on behalf of the two universities. Taking innovation in engineering education as the core approach, the two universities will deepen education and teaching reform, jointly develop high-quality courses aligned with global demand for engineering talent, comprehensively optimize students’ learning and training experience, and enhance graduates’ employment competitiveness and career development potential. The two sides will also carry out in-depth exchanges of practical experience in areas such as transnational education operations and overseas campus management, so as to promote the simultaneous improvement of education management capabilities on both sides.
As one of the first national pilot universities for the construction of National Institutes of Excellent Engineers, Southeast University has long been committed to industry-education integrated talent cultivation. Closely aligned with national strategic needs, the university has joined hands with leading enterprises in various industries to build university-enterprise collaborative education communities and has established a mature Excellent Engineer training system.
Southeast University and Newcastle University have maintained sound long-term cooperation. The disciplinary strengths of the two universities are highly complementary, and their foundation for cooperation is solid. In recent years, the two universities have carried out a number of practical and effective collaborations in engineering technology R&D, academic exchanges and visits, and joint talent training, accumulating rich collaborative experience and laying a solid foundation for this deeper strategic cooperation.
The China-UK cooperation project has received active responses and strong support from high-quality enterprises at home and abroad. Domestic partner enterprises including Nanjing Iron & Steel, Sciyon Wisdom, and Estun have expressed that they will fully participate in the joint training work of the two universities, open high-quality enterprise practice positions, build practical education platforms, and support international engineering talents in coming to China for exchange.
Overseas partner enterprises such as CCID UK and XCMG Europe have also stated that they will make full use of overseas industrial resources to provide localized practice positions for international students, support the cultivation of transnational engineering talents and localized talent recruitment, and realize complementary university-enterprise resources and collaborative education.
Looking ahead, Southeast University will continue to deepen the substance and broaden the scope of cooperation with Newcastle University, connect high-quality enterprise resources at home and abroad, and work together to create a new Excellent Engineer training model characterized by “international vision, local practice, and industry-education integration.” The university will strive to cultivate high-caliber engineering talents with a global perspective, strong engineering practice capabilities, and an innovative spirit, contributing Southeast University’s strength to serving China’s high-level opening-up and promoting coordinated development between China-UK engineering education and industry.
