On April 22, the Ministry of Education held the National Excellent Engineer Training Promotion Meeting in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to further advance the cultivation of excellent engineers in the new era and deepen the integration of industry and education as well as science and education. Wu Xiaocheng, Secretary of the CPC Southeast University Committee, attended the meeting.
Before the meeting, Huai Jinpeng, Secretary of the CPC Leadership Group of the Ministry of Education and Minister of Education, led a delegation to visit joint training enterprises and institutions. The delegation visited State Grid Electric Power Research Institute / NARI Group, Nanjing Estun Automation Co., Ltd., Purple Mountain Laboratories, and other organizations to learn about the progress of university-enterprise collaborative education on site. Faculty and student representatives from Southeast University reported on the university’s innovative measures and phased achievements in Excellent Engineer training.
Zhao Yan, Vice Governor of Jiangsu Province; Sun Youhong, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and President of Southeast University; Wu Gang, Director-General of the Department of Degree Management and Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Education; and Jiang Yong, Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, accompanied the delegation during the visits.
At State Grid Electric Power Research Institute, Qiao Yong, a 2023 master’s student in electrical engineering at Southeast University and a joint training student, reported on his research experience in university-enterprise joint projects, including power grid operation risk prevention and control, as well as power supply assurance control for power grids with a high proportion of renewable energy. He also shared his growth path of conducting scientific research under the guidance of dual advisors, improving practical capabilities, and supporting future employment at the enterprise.
At Nanjing Estun Automation, Wang Bingyi, an undergraduate student from Southeast University’s Future Technology College and one of the first students nationwide majoring in Future Robotics, reported on his “3+1+X” integrated undergraduate-graduate training experience. He participated in embodied intelligence R&D, published papers at top international conferences, and won awards in national competitions, demonstrating the strong competence of reserve talents for Excellent Engineer training.
At Purple Mountain Laboratories, You Xiaohu, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the laboratory, and Professor of Southeast University, reported on the integrated university-laboratory training mechanism featuring “joint appointment of advisors, joint training of students, joint development of courses, joint research on projects, and shared platforms.” He introduced the joint training of 136 engineering master’s and doctoral students through major 6G science and technology tasks. Among them, many have grown into core technical backbones, and the team was awarded the “China Youth May Fourth Medal Collective.” Cao Yang, an engineering doctoral graduate who stayed at the laboratory after graduation, and Zhang Yi, a current engineering doctoral student, shared their experiences.
During the visits, Huai Jinpeng carefully listened to the reports from teachers and students and asked in detail about curriculum design, dual-advisor guidance, practical training, achievement transformation, and career development. He fully recognized Southeast University’s Excellent Engineer training system, which is rooted in the front line of industry, closely aligned with urgent national needs, integrates undergraduate and graduate education, and innovates evaluation models. He also praised the university’s effective practice of transforming real enterprise needs into talent training projects and enabling students to grow through participation in major engineering tasks.
As one of the first institutions approved to build a National Institute of Excellent Engineers, Southeast University has continued to deepen industry-education integration and science-education integration. The university has taken the lead in establishing a provincial Excellent Engineer Training Consortium, created nationally pioneering platforms such as an information-based management system for enterprise practice, the Young Inventors Competition, and overseas branches, and built deep cooperative relationships with leading enterprises and national strategic science and technology platforms such as State Grid Corporation of China, Estun, and Purple Mountain Laboratories. Through these efforts, Southeast University is committed to cultivating a high-level team of excellent engineers who can serve national strategies and support the development of new quality productive forces.
