Recently, the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transport released the Guiding Plan for Digital Transportation Construction in 2024. The Digital Bus Intelligent Application Project Based on 5G + BeiDou submitted by the Public Transport Group under Nanjing Urban Construction Group was successfully selected. The inclusion of the project demonstrates the Group’s determination to actively respond to the national strategy of building China into a transport powerhouse, and also reflects the high recognition from the government and industry of Nanjing Bus’s role as a leading example in the digital transformation of public transportation.
In 2023, all 750 new energy buses put into operation by Nanjing Bus Group were equipped with onboard intelligent terminals featuring the “5G + BeiDou” functional module. Leveraging the technological advantages of 5G + BeiDou, large-scale application, and empowerment by new technologies, Nanjing Bus has improved both service quality and operational efficiency.
The “5G + BeiDou” onboard intelligent terminals of Nanjing Bus mainly consist of three core components: an intelligent dispatch terminal, an integrated high-definition video terminal, and an active safety defense terminal. The intelligent dispatch terminal is equipped with standard BeiDou high-precision positioning and 5G low-latency communication functions, significantly improving the accuracy and real-time performance of vehicle positioning and dispatching. This provides strong support for optimizing departure intervals and reducing passenger waiting times. By linking with the Nanjing Bus Online App, smart bus stops, onboard stop display screens, and other resources, it provides the public with more convenient, efficient, safe, and accurate travel services.
The integrated high-definition video terminal enables full coverage of in-vehicle and external video surveillance. It also integrates functions such as one-touch alarm, passenger flow counting, and video processing and recognition, providing strong data support for operational monitoring and efficiency traceability.
The active safety defense terminal includes ADAS, DSM, BSD blind-spot warning, and electronic rearview mirror systems. These terminals use AI video recognition technology to accurately identify dangerous and poor driving behaviors and provide timely warnings to drivers, ensuring driving safety. In addition, based on its own safety management requirements, the bus group developed a safety driving management system for bus vehicles, enabling in-depth analysis and profiling of drivers’ safety data and providing strong support for safety management and training.
